Major museums, archives, libraries in the UK. There are too many individual museums, archives and libraries throughout the country to list all of them here, but there are sites which provide links to individual institutions in the Catalogues and directories topic.
British Library
The national library of the United Kingdom, the UK's leading research library.
British Library Sound Archive
One of the largest sound archives in the world. Opened in 1955 as the British Institute of Recorded Sound, it became part of the British Library in 1983.
Family Record Centre
Provides access to some of the most important sources for family history research in England and Wales, including births, marriages and deaths and census returns. Run jointly by the General Register Office and the National Archives.
National Archives
The national archive of England, Wales and the United Kingdom. A new organisation launched in April 2003, bringing together the Public Record Office (PRO) and the Historical Manuscripts Commission (HMC).
National Archives of Scotland
The national archive of Scotland, the repository for the public and legal records of Scotland but also for many local and private archives.
National Film and Television Archive
The largest collection of films and television titles in Europe; part of the British Film Institute, it is the custodian of the UK's moving image heritage.
National Library of Scotland
The national library of Scotland, Scotland's largest library and the world centre for the study of Scotland and the Scots.
National Library of Wales / Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru
The national library of Wales, containing a huge collection of works about Wales and the other Celtic countries.
Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI)
The official place of deposit for public records in Northern Ireland.
