A bold new poster campaign run by Leeds library service aimed at commuters is turning heads in the city.
The posters can be seen at Leeds railway station, commuter stations and bus stops all over the city and are aimed at commuters who are likely to read on their way to and from work.
Each one includes a tongue-in-cheek slogan and a strong image, for instance the poster ‘Have a passionate affair behind your bookshop’s back’ shows a lacey bra draped across an open book.
As well as the poster exhorting the public to try their local library, rather than a bookshop, there are posters on the theme of crime novels, horror and chick-lit. Each emphasises that book borrowing is free and gives a plug to Leeds Libraries.
Thinking differently
Catherine Blanshard Chief Libraries, Arts and Heritage Officer, said: "We wanted to do an important campaign that got people thinking differently about libraries.
She explained that they wanted the campaign to go back to basics and show that the book stock is important and that there is plenty of new stock on offer in Leeds libraries.
"It's a message both to the public and to staff that this is what libraries are all about," said Catherine.
And Elise Roberts, of Leeds City Council marketing and communications, added: “The aim is to convince people to try libraries rather than buying their books, by dispelling the myth of them being stuffy places with out of date books.”
