School library commission release date

Chaired by Baroness Estelle Morris, the School Library Commission is a joint initiative between The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and the National Literacy Trust.

During the consultation period (January to March 2010) the Commission received 96 submissions to the open call for evidence. Further information was gathered through a roundtable discussion with key stakeholders, focus groups for head teachers, teachers, school librarians and pupils, plus a quantitative attitudinal survey of 17 thousand pupils.

The final report will be released on 15 September 2010 after schools and Parliament have returned from summer recess.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because <a target="_Blank" href="http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/">Arts Council England</a> has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/">The National Archives</a> has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. The initiative will assess the role of the school library in the 21st century school. Roy Clare, said, “We launched this commission to answer current inconsistencies in the school library services and to offer effective examples and support for school libraries in the future."
