Funding to support museums, libraries and archives to run community projects that will generate materials for The People's Record (www.peoplesrecord.org.uk) is now available.

A total of £15,000 is available for grants of up to £1000. Applications from projects that have previously received Peoples Record funding are welcome, as well as new projects.

The People's Record is part of MLA's 2012 programme which aims to create a collective record of the public's response to hosting the 2012 Games.

Since 2008 MLA has funded museums, libraries and archives to lead projects in their communities to record their response to 2012 and to tell their stories.

All the projects explore at least one of the People's Record core themes:

 • Health, Sport & Wellbeing
 • Changing Places
 • Young People's Aspirations

The materials the projects generate such as films, oral history recordings, photographs, writing and visual art can be published on the People's Record website to ensure that the material is preserved as a permanent record beyond 2012.

From 1st October 2011 Arts Council England will assume the role of lead strategic agency for libraries and museums in England from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), and will take over management of the Peoples Record project.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
