International Knowledge Bank

MLA has put together a series of factsheets to provide useful information about the various aspects of international work. Whether you need to discover sources of funding, find out what opportunities professional organisations can provide, or link your work to the current and future big international issues, you should find something of interest here.

It can be used in conjunction with the advocacy section when preparing bids, and the series of case studies should give you some idea of projects that have worked in the past.

Funding

This section provides details of funding sources and advice to support international working. The funding and other support listed may relate to working or learning overseas, brokering international partnerships, exporting skills and services or developing activities to engage with our own culturally diverse communities in the UK. Before you embark on raising funds, it helps to be clear about what you want to achieve and why. The fund-raising checklist, in the checklists section below, should help you with this.

European funding
Sponsorship
Government departments
Trusts and foundations
Other sources of funding and support

Professional networks

All international projects benefit significantly from personal contacts, and involvement in professional networks is vital to help develop these links. The pages linked below list some key organisations for the museum, archives and library sector, but if your interest is in a particular aspect with wide reaching and cross-domain implications, such as diversity or ICT, then it may be worthwhile identifying networks specific to these, rather than looking exclusively for links within the sector.
