External Policy Responses

As part of its advice and advocacy role, MLA responds formally to consultative and policy documents that have a bearing on its policy agendas. These documents may be issued by government, public bodies or other organisations. MLA responses are normally prepared as part of a formal consultation exercise initiated by the body issuing the original document; however MLA sometimes also comments on documents and policy statements where no formal feedback is invited.

Response exercises are normally initiated through proposals from MLA staff to the Senior Management Team, or as a result of suggestions by Board members. Outlines and first drafts are prepared by MLA staff in consultation with appropriate specialists. In due course, drafts are submitted to the Senior Management Team and in some circumstances to the Board, before the agreed response is sent to its intended recipient and posted on the MLA web site.
