Response to the Department for Culture, Media & Sport review of the British Library 18/12/00 MLA responded to the Department for Culture, Media & Sport five-year review of the British Library, welcoming the BL's increasing emphasis on cooperation and partnership as an exemplar for the national museums, emphasising the scope for even closer collaboration with museums and archives as well as libraries, but also stressing that legislation for deposit of digital material is an urgent priority. top November 2000 Response to the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions consultation document Local Strategic Partnerships 14/11/00 In its response MLA has emphasised the contribution that museums, libraries and archives can make to new council powers, under the Local Government Act 2000, to promote or improve the economic, social or environmental wellbeing of their area, and urges Government Offices to take their role into account when assessing LSPs for possible funding. top October 2000 More strategic approach to Lottery funding needed if innovative hybrid propositions are to be accommodated 04/10/00 In its formal submission to the House of Commons Culture, Media & Sport Committee inquiry into the operation of the National Lottery, MLA has acknowledged the benefit of Lottery funding in allowing the museums, archives and libraries sector to expand and develop its services, and has highlighted the scope for its extension, emphasising the need for a more strategic approach to the setting of funding priorities, particularly as regards the growth of hybrid services. Response to the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions consultation Best Value and Audit Commission Performance Indicators for 2001/2002 27/10/2000 MLA responded expressing concern at the intention to measure user satisfaction only every two to three years, calling for a regular measure of take-up of Electronic Service Delivery, and wondering whether Local Public Service Agreement incentives could be used to encourage adoption of cross-cutting Audit Commission indicators. top September 2000 Living in the future - whatever happened to Gita, Erin, Alice, Campbell, Josh and Serena? 15/09/00 Responding to the Foresight Electronic Commerce Task Force report Smoke on the Water. A Fire in the Sky, MLA has expressed the hope that other Foresight Task Forces will also be encouraged to factor into their future scenarios the multiplicity of roles that the museums, archives and libraries sector can play, and thereby mainstream their services in politicians' eyes. Click here for the full text of MLA's response. top August 2000 Shared agenda needed on English Heritage priority issues for the historic environment 04/08/00 Commenting on the English Heritage consultation on its Review of policies relating to the historic environment, MLA welcome the implicitly holistic approach, anticipates that the strategy will extend beyond English Heritage?s immediate concerns, and urges a shared agenda on priority issues such as education, access and inclusion, and stewardship of the moveable heritage. July 2000 Capacity building exercise needed to enable museums, galleries and archives to reach out to whole communities 31/07/00 In its response to the Department for Culture, Media & Sport consultation document Centres for Social Change: Museums, Galleries and Archives for All, MLA has said that a capacity building exercise will be needed to reskill or recruit the staff necessary to develop outreach activities and that, although it will be possible to make modest gains with little financial input, most of the proposals in the document carry cost implications. Holistic approach needed to community cultural and learning services 03/07/00 Responding to the Department for Culture, Media & Sport consultation document Comprehensive & Efficient: standards for modern public libraries, MLA has welcomed the principle of standards for public library services, but warns of concerns and dangers about the proposals as currently framed and calls on DCMS to seize the opportunity to take a much more holistic approach to provision of cultural and learning services in a community. Click here for the full text of MLA's response. top June 2000 Museums, libraries and archives can play key role in neighbourhood renewal, says MLA 30/06/00 In its response to the Cabinet Office Social Exclusion Unit's framework for consultation for the National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal, MLA has said that museums, libraries and archives already play a key role in local community identity, learning and skills improvement, and economic development, and are thus a good delivery mechanism for many of the key ideas contained in the Strategy. MLA supports Audit Commission proposal to move to cross-cutting performance indicators 05/06/00 In its response to the Review of the Audit Commission?s Role in Setting Statutory Performance Indicators, MLA has supported the Commission's proposal to move to ACPIs on quality of life and more difficult cross cutting areas, and has highlighted their value for both research and advocacy purposes, saying that it would wish to be involved in their development. Click here for the full text of MLA's response. top May 2000 MLA urges 'complementary' approach in response to Library Association draft Corporate Plan 19/05/00 MLA has welcomed the Library Association's recognition in its draft Corporate Plan of the cross-sectoral nature of many policy areas, and has said that the two bodies should try to ensure that their activities are complementary, and that a distinction needs to be made between lobbying and advocacy.
