Standards and Guidelines for Museums, Libraries and Archives in
the UK - 2003
Background
In 2001, MLA commissioned the consultants ABL Cultural Consulting
to carry out a mapping exercise of standards and guidelines
relevant to the museums, libraries and archives domains. In late
2002, Jane Weeks and Tim Mason were commissioned to update the
listing. The purpose of the project was twofold:
- to provide MLA with a clear and comprehensive list and
description of all standards schemes operational in the UK
which are relevant to MLA's constituent domains, including
international schemes
- to give MLA's constituent domains an informed picture of the
standards schemes to enable museums, libraries and archives
to assess which are the most appropriate schemes for them

The definition of a "standard" was deliberately kept as wide as
possible, to ensure that the listing would be both wide-ranging
and comprehensive.
