Module 1: Understanding disability

Scope

This module can be completed by an individual member of staff but it would be equally valuable for a small team. This module is suitable for all library staff.

Learning Objective

To learn about and better understand the range of disabilities that people have.

Generic Learning Outcomes covered by this module

The Generic Learning Outcomes are based on the Inspiring Learning for All Project. Learning outcomes are what people have "learnt" as a result of an experience, programme or event. They can be

  • Very specific (10 key facts about the Ancient Greeks) and very broad (the development of a more positive attitude to learning)
  • Set by organisations or by the learners themselves
  • Used to assess and describe the learning which has taken place

Complete the Learning Needs Analysis Form to identify your specific learning needs using these generic learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

  • Increase in knowledge and awareness of service plans and standards on services for disabled users in your library
  • Increase in knowledge and awareness of the Disability Discrimination Act
  • Increase in knowledge and awareness of the needs of a range of disabled users

Skills

  • Improved management skills in supporting and training staff in working with disabled users

Attitudes and values

  • Demonstrating creativity, enjoyment, inspiration and innovation in responding to the needs of disabled users
  • Demonstrating sensitivity, support and loyalty for colleagues with disabilities
  • Demonstrating respect for diversity and treating people as individuals
  • Demonstrating a willingness to develop and take responsibility for own learning to support disabled users

Task 1

The task requires you to read the guide Disability in Context and based on the guide, to prepare a Powerpoint presentation (up to 10 slides) or an information sheet (no more than 2 sides of A4) for your colleagues outlining:

Timings needed for activity

  • Reading the guide 1 hour
  • Reading/viewing other resources 1 hour
  • Preparing Powerpoint/information sheet 2 hours

Task 2

You should then prepare a Powerpoint presentation or information sheet to present this information to your staff/team meeting or organise a training session for staff.

Timings needed for activity

  • Presenting to a group of staff 30 mins
