Module 2: Knowing sources of information and support including websites

Scope

This module should be completed by an individual member of staff. This module is suitable for all library staff.

Learning Objective

To learn about and use the main sources of information and support for disabled people.

Generic Learning Outcomes covered by this module

Complete the  Learning Needs Analysis Form to identify your specific learning needs.

Knowledge and understanding

  • Increase in knowledge and awareness of Equal Opportunities, Disability Discrimination Act and the Race Relations Act
  • Increase in knowledge and awareness of partners, stakeholders, suppliers, organisations, agencies and other service providers
  • Increase in knowledge and awareness of resources available and the range of products, services and technologies

Skills

  • Improved learning and access skills in designing and supporting learning activities matched to identified needs of disabled users
  • Improved reader development skills meeting the needs of disabled users
  • Improved enquiry skills meeting the needs of disabled users
  • Building, maintaining and using work relationships with a range of disabled users and the organisations which support them

Attitudes and values

  • Demonstrating creativity, enjoyment, inspiration and innovation in responding to the needs of disabled users
  • Demonstrating active involvement in partnerships with internal and external groups/organisations working with disabled users
  • Demonstrating a willingness to develop and take responsibility for own learning to support disabled users
  • Supporting and showing respect for diversity and treating people as individuals

Task 1

This task requires you to look at 10 websites from the list and to write a brief description of each. You should choose 5 websites from the general list and then 5 websites that relate to a particular user group. Discuss with your line manager or mentor which 10 sites to use.

Timings needed for activity

  • Viewing 10 websites 2 ½ hours (15 minutes per website)
  • Word processing your descriptions 30 minutes

Task 2

This task requires you to choose one of your ten websites and to evaluate it in depth using the checklist.

Timings needed for activity

  • In-depth website evaluation 1 ½ hours

Task 3

This task requires you to find out how your service is meeting the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Timings needed for activity

  • Finding out how your service is meeting The Disability Discrimination Act 2 hours
