Shaheen talks about widening participation particularly for adults with mental health issues.
Shaheen:
My name is Shaheen Chohan, I am from Kingston adult education and I am the widening participation officer. I enjoy working in the community with different ranges of people providing participation. One of our main priority groups is working with people who have mental health problems and as a tutor working on the IT course. The occupational therapist would have to start to identify the clients who may be interested in doing the courses. When the widening participation project was first set up there was already a plan to target certain groups in the area as well as targeting people with mental health problems, elderly people, disadvantaged groups, refugees, asylum seekers, people like that. Mainly hard to reach learners and people who have found it hard to get into mainstream courses. So we try and target those groups and try to put on courses that they might find of interest and springboard them onto other courses as well.
