Digital content
MLA aims to facilitate the creation of digital content by the
museums, libraries and archives sector, and to work to provide
better and easier access to this content. The strategic vision
is the Knowledge Web. MLA is
working with other public-sector agencies in a collaborative
cross-sectoral partnership in the Strategic e-Content
Alliance (SEA) to realise a common information environment.
This would exploit the full value of the high-quality
information that currently exists by allowing users to retrieve
it all, presented to suit each individual's particular needs at
the time.
Content is made available through the People's Network Service
which includes access to Enrich UK, the gateway
to digital content on 150 sites created through the Digitisation of Learning
Materials Programme (nof-digitise) funded by the New
Opportunities Fund (now the Big Lottery
Fund).
MLA's work in collection description and digital preservation are two
vital underpinnings of giving continuing access to digital
content.
Previous work
Net Gain - aimed to enable
collaboration between projects developed through the Designation
Challenge Fund and the Renaissance in the Regions programme.
IT Challenge Fund - aimed to
encourage innovation in the application of new technologies to
museums. The Fund ran between 1999 and 2001, and provided
£500,000 to 11 projects.
