Community Engagement in Action – Three Workshops During January and February 2007, MLA staged three workshops in London, Birmingham and Leeds to highlight excellent work being undertaken by public libraries in engaging with local communities. The workshops were specifically aimed at those public library services wishing to apply to the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Libraries Programme. Library services will only be successful in attracting Community Libraries Programme funding if they demonstrate the role local communities will play in proposed library projects. Each project application MUST address the following outcome: “Communities are actively engaged in the development, delivery and management of library services.” These presentations showcased library services that have already successfully engaged local communities and how library staff were involved.
