Communities
There are a number of Framework for the Future programmes which
support public libraries in engaging with and involving their communities.
Community Engagement
MLA has been working with Community Service Volunteers to
research current practice in Community Engagement in public
libraries. Their report found that whilst some library services
are working closely with their communities, involving them in
shaping and delivering services, many staff within the library
sector have fears about working in this way. Further training
and support is needed for the library sector to better
understand and implement community engagement.
A toolkit has been produced to provide an introduction to
Community Engagement for library staff and managers, and to help
library services start working in this way, or to extend their
work further. The report and toolkit are available here .
Know your Community
This IPF best practice guide to help public libraries improve
their knowledge and understanding of varying community needs has
recently been revised. The new version has updated links to
useful websites that can support library services in developing
community profiles, as well as information and guidance on
choosing the best means of consultation, conducting surveys,
running focus groups and acting on research findings. There are
also case studies of good practice from seven library
authorities. Download the IPF toolkit ( PDF 2MB)
