Renaissance report commissioned

The UK has some of the finest museums in the world, and England's regional museums and galleries are a vital resource. They provide rich opportunities for learning; they promote social inclusion; they inspire and foster creativity; and they contribute to economic and social regeneration.

Back in December 2000, the then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Chris Smith, announced the formation of a Task Force set up in response to people's growing concerns about the state of England's regional museums and galleries. Its recommendations presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform them.

The Renaissance in the Regions report was produced by MLA in partnership with a group of stakeholders. The report was shaped by consultation meetings in every region and by papers which were commissioned to support the work of the group.
