Continuing Professional Development 2010-11

The Strategic Commissioning Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme 2009-11 has provided over 4000 opportunities across the nine regions of England, to enable the cultural sector to gain further skills, knowledge and experience, helping to deliver quality programmes for children and young people.

Seminars, workshops, advice surgeries and networking events have been offered to museum, archive and other cultural educators, as well as to the wider children's workforce, to strengthen the role of museums, galleries and archives in the delivery of the Children's Agenda. Participation in these activities has been subsidised through the Strategic Commissioning Programme, and many are offered free or at a greatly reduced cost.

The CPD programme has been framed around the Common Core Framework of Skills, developed in consultation with the Children's Workforce & Development Council, to support the development of key skills for sector staff working with children and young people.

Continuing Professional Development offers 2010-11

Supporting pupils' literacy

Museum and archives are helping children and young people to develop literacy skills with inspiration from their collections, in partnership with other cultural sector and children's workforce providers. The MLA Strategic Commissioning CPD programme funded a series of exciting professional development offers, including the National Literacy Trust's 'Talk for Writing' training, Sarah Wilkie Consulting's 'Read the Past, Write the Future' series, and training input for teachers, museums and archives through the British Library's 'Literature in Context' project.

Commissioning for Changing Times

Campaign for Learning's free training events - Commissioning for Changing Times - took place across regions of England. This training provided organisations working across these sectors a practical insight into what commissioning is, why it's important, and how it can be an essential 'tool' to help your organisation be sustainable through a tough economic climate. An online pack and snapshot guide are now available to download.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
