Initial Teacher Training 2009-11
"The placement was one of the most inspirational weeks of my teaching life so far. The tutors were knowledgeable and motivating. I loved every minute of it!" Trainee teacher participant 2009
Between 2009 and 2011:
- 3,000 trainee teachers experienced a placement at a museum or archive
- 10,000 children and young people took part in the trainees' projects
- 400 museum and archive staff benefited through training and partnership links.
The Initial Teacher Training (ITT) project built up learning partnerships between museums, archives and ITT providers such as universities and colleges. Trainee teachers experienced tailored placements within cultural heritage settings, ranging from a couple of days to work embedded across the academic year. The trainees created new approaches to the museum and archive collections and shared their skills and enthusiasm with the cultural heritage staff.
Every placement shared the three core aims of the project:
-
Inspire - use museum and archive collections to inspire teachers at the beginning of their professional careers;
-
Empower - support trainees to create their own approaches to collections, to empower them to use museums and archives wherever they teach;
-
Build partnerships - foster sustainable links between Initial Teacher Training providers, museums and archives
A selection of case studies and advice sheets are available to download demonstrating different approaches to partnerships between ITT providers and cultural heritage organisations.
