Self assessment framework

The MLA Self Assessment Framework can help museum, library and archive staff develop their skills, knowledge and understanding to work with children, young people and the wide range of organisations that support them.

The MLA Self Assessment Framework interprets the six 'core skills' or areas of expertise from the Common Core Framework developed by the Children’s Workforce Development Council for the wider children’s workforce. These core skills reflect a set of common values and defines the basic skills and knowledge needed by those working with children, young people and families.

 • Effective communication & engagement
 • Child & young person development
 • Safeguarding & promoting the welfare of the child
 • Supporting transitions
 • Integrated & Multi-agency working
 • Information sharing

It is expected that every one working with children, young people and families will be able to demonstrate a basic level of competence in the six areas defined above.

The MLA Self Assessment Framework workbook provides a workforce development toolkit to assist in the implementation of these core skills. The Self Assessment Framework can be used by staff and volunteers in all museums, libraries and archives in a variety of ways:

 • As part of formal performance appraisal and planning systems.
 • As part of induction.
 • As an individual planning and assessment tool.
 • To work with colleagues to assess expertise and plan work projects.
 • In schemes which contribute to Continuing Professional Development.
 • To assist in writing job descriptions and define skill needs for job roles.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
