Hot topics - e-books in libraries

MLA supports the development of an e-book offer in libraries as part of service modernisation and to respond to the changing expectations around our public library services.

In order to foster rapid learning and service development in this new area for public libraries, MLA has set up a ‘community of practice’, an online group providing peer support for e-book service development. Staff responsible for developing or investigating e-book services in public libraries can join to find out about others’ experiences and share what they have learnt.

The members of the community of practice have helped MLA to develop a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document for library services in the early stages of considering an e-books service. The information is based on the experiences of library staff who have already set up an e-book offer, as well as support and advice from RNIB and the SCL Digital Group. To read the FAQs click here

This document provides information and advice, but it must be stressed that services and products are developing very quickly at present and therefore, while every effort has been made to provide accurate and up to date information, this cannot be guaranteed. If you are aware of any new service developments not mentioned in the FAQs, please email katie.pekacar@mla.gov.uk

The number of library services offering e-books to the public has grown exponentially over the past year. There are now a number of library services offering e-books and e-audio books to the public. To view a list of these library services click on the link below:

A number of other services are also developing their e-books offer and are due to launch the service this year. The list of library services offering e-books will be updated as and when new information becomes available.

If you would like to join the e-books community of practice or offer information about any e-books services your libraries are offering, please email katie.pekacar@mla.gov.uk

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
