Collections and buildings in the East Midlands

Our aim is that by putting collections at the heart of everything we do, every aspect of museums' work with every community will be rooted in meaningful engagement with collections that are well documented, clearly understood, sustainable and accessible.

Since 2002, Renaissance East Midlands has prioritised making the region's collections accessible to more people in new ways. Renaissance funds collections staff across the region including a Regional Collections Development Officer, curators, collections managers, documentation and access assistants to support collections information management, mapping, peer review, standards of collections care and display, temporary exhibitions and new, web-based resources.

Buildings Projects

In 2008 - 09 Renaissance East Midlands encouraged and supported six museums to reduce their environmental impact through its Green Museums initiative. In 2009-11 the project will be rolled out; to find out more please visit the Buildings Projects page.

Digital Access to Collections

In 2008-2009 support was provided for museums to build capacity in digitisation of their collections through a pilot Digital Skills Development Programme and the production of guidelines. The Digitisation Development Fund supported fifteen projects that ranged from hardware purchases to an image library feasibility study and the development of a community website. 44 individual museums benefited from this programme.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
