Cultural Olympiad

A series of cross-sector Cultural Olympiad projects delivered in partnership with the libraries and archives leading to a Stories of the World finale in 2012 Journal Project

Then & Now Part 1 (Special Olympics) 2009/10 
This exhibition of everyday and sports fashion 1989 and 2009 was presented for six weeks in Leicester in summer of 2009 encompassing the period of the Special Olympics.


2009-12 Journals 500 young people (aged 11-21) StreetStyle SportStyle
will be recruited from across the region to engage with the Special Olympics, Cultural Olympiad events and 2012 Games and to record that engagement.

Migration Stories 2010/11 Focusing on migrant communities (and especially newer arrivals) in city, coastal and country parts of the region, migration stories will be collected, collated and published, drawing on previous work such as the Moving Here project. In parallel, known emigrants from the same areas will be invited to share emigration stories from the East Midlands.


Empedia 2010/11 A collection of maps, audio trails and interactive tours enabling visitors to explore cultural and historic sites across the region. Empedia website


1948 Heritage Link 2011/12 From 2011 the 1948 Olympic Torch held at Loughborough University
will embark on an epic journey to connect public heritage sites (including parks) across the region. At each location there will be celebratory events, with local people invited to share their memories, photographs and memorabilia of 1948.


Then & Now Part 2 2012 Then and Now Part 2 will build on Then & Now Part 1 taking the form of a
series of simultaneous exhibitions across the region using the Then and Now theme but encompassing
collections of everyday and sports fashion, focusing on the years 1948 and 2012.


Stories of the World 2012 The East Midlands' Stories of the World programme is called Dress the World.  It celebrates the global exchanges that have shaped and continue to shape fashion.  The focus is on the East Midlands and on how these connections are seen through the eyes of young people.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because <a target="_Blank" href="http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/">Arts Council England</a> has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/">The National Archives</a> has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications.  Continue reading
