Derbyshire Heritage Awards 2009

Museum development in the East Midlands

Renaissance East Midlands has five Museum Deveoplment Officers, one for each county in the region who work with museums on the ground to help them access funding, training and generally support their ongoing development. The museum development officers work in close partnership with the museum forum of each county.

How we can help:

Heritage Awards: The Renaissance Heritage Awards are run each year in each county to celebrate the excellent work of museums. To access the aqpplication forms for the awards 2010 and information about the 2009 winners please visit the Heritage Awards Page

Survive and Thrive: Survive and Thrive is a programme managed by Cultivate, to address future sustainability of museums by supporting organisations to work with business planning and Board development experts. Museums will undertake a review of their governance structures and business planning procedures. Tailored support will be delivered to ensure participating museums will have robust governance structures fit for the future. 20 museums will benefit, with 10 taking part in Arts and Business Board development workshops. Please see the Survive and Thrive Flyer for further information or contact andrew@cultivate-em.com

Accreditation: The Regional Accreditation Officer is part of the museum development team and provides direct support to all museums to help them meet and maintain the standards of the national Museum Accreditation scheme. The Museum Development Officers (MDOs) also provide support and can be a first point of contact. A regional curatorial advisers network is also maintained providing training and support for curatorial advisers as part of the Accreditation scheme. Contact Simon Davies, Regional Accreditation Officer on Tel: 0116 305 5097 simon.davies@leics.gov.uk

Universal Offer: Renaissance employs a Museum Development Officer (MDO) in Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire who work alongside the Leicestershire County Council Community Museums Officer to deliver support and advice to over 250 non-Renaissance partner museums (small to medium sized local authorities and independent museums) across the region. The majority of museums are run solely by volunteers and MDOs provide support in developing partnership working, funding applications, joint marketing initiatives and develop projects in response to need and advocate the sector locally, regionally and nationally. MDOs support the county museums forums to ensure museum networking and sharing of best practice across counties. Museums are also supported and encouraged to participate in other REM projects.

The Flagship Volunteering Project: The project seeks to help museums become champions of best practice in museum volunteering with the aim of raising standards across the region. This will be achieved by setting up cluster groups of museums that are at various stages of volunteer development to share skills and experiences. Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
