A Brief Summary of the Awards
The Heritage Awards are held annually in each county to celebrate the achievements of museums across theregion in a wide range of areas. Organised by the county Museum Development Officers they are partnerships between Renaissance East Midlands and the county museums and heritage fora. The awardsboth reward outstanding achievement and showcase the variety of work undertaken by museums and heritage groups. Many of the museums taking part in the awards are run solely by volunteers proving how much can be achieved often on limited resources. Award winners inspire other groups across the region encouraging new initiatives and activities based on the proven success of others.
The awards began in Leicestershire in 1989 organised by Leicestershire County Council to recognise high quality work at over 40 independent museums across the county. Renaissance East Midlands has expanded the awards to celebrate the work of over 250 museums and heritage groups in all the counties of the East Midlands. In 2010 the first regional awards will be held recognising work of regional significance, in partnership with East Midlands Tourism.
