Future of SHARE consultation: Results

From June 2011 the way the Renaissance programme is delivered in the region will change, with the dismantling of the hub museum structure.

In the light of this and other changes, it’s clear that SHARE needs to evolve too. We decided therefore to hold a region-wide consultation with museums on the future of the scheme, including four meetings in Cambridge, Luton, Chelmsford and Lowestoft. To inform the debate we produced a consultation document:

Over 100 museums took part in the consultation and were unanimous in supporting SHARE’s founding principle: that we can help ourselves and each other by contributing to a network of support and advice.

We’ve now analysed the feedback collected through the consultation. A summary has been produced which also outlines our plans for a transition year in 2011-12. These include providing a full training programme as well as exploring with you different models for SHARE’s future:

What is clear from the consultation is that this is a sector willing to SHARE. This provides a very strong platform for the continued success and evolution of the scheme.

We will be contacting museums in April with a fuller explanation of how SHARE will work in the coming year, together with information on how you can join the new-look network.

This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
