North West Training and Events

Renaissance North West coordinates and delivers a programme of training and skills development for staff and volunteers at museums and galleries across the region.

The workforce development programme is responsive, flexible and accessible and focuses on sharing knowledge and disseminating good practice between organisations across the region.

Renaissance North West also works in partnership with other organisations such as GEM, the NW Fed and Museums Association to ensure that opportunities for staff development are maximised.

Programme

Renaissance North West works in partnership with local, regional and national organisations to design and deliver a programme of practical learning activity to develop the skills of paid staff and volunteers.

Working with specialist colleagues from Hub venues as well as with external training providers, Renaissance North West is supporting sector relevant activities that address issues around:

  • career progression
  • management and leadership
  • the Accreditation standard
  • collections care
  • workforce diversity
  • education and lifelong learning
  • economic, environmental and social sustainability

Training & Events 2011

Historical Research

Conservation Studios, Preston

This workshop will be a mixture of theory and discussion around the subject of conducting historical research. It will be aimed at all museum staff who carry out research on their collections. The topics covered on the day will include how to conduct original historical research; how to locate primary source materials and use archives and repositories; using printed and online tools; ethical issues and how to interpret historical information. Delegates will be shown some suggested models for historical research. The day will be run by Emily Bannister from Manchester University.

Curating for the non-specialist: Textiles and costume

Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester

This workshop will cover aspects of the development of textiles and clothing over time; key areas to aid identification and dating; how to look after, store and display your collection. The day will be run by Frances Pritchard and Ann French from the Whitworth Art Gallery. Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. The day is aimed at any museum staff who have a textile collection and would like to know more about how to understand and use it.

Accreditation 2011: Forward Planning

Forward planning has always been a part of accreditation and will continue to be an integral part of the revised standard. This workshop will take delegates through the requirements and guidelines for a forward plan for Accreditation 2011. The day is aimed at all museum staff with responsibility for forward planning and will be given by Diane Gwilt from National Museum Wales.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because <a target="_Blank" href="http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/">Arts Council England</a> has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/">The National Archives</a> has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications.  Continue reading
