Creative Apprenticeships in the South West

Renaissance South West funded and supported apprenticeships in Cornwall, Plymouth, Wiltshire and Bristol have now come to, or are coming to, an end. Three ex-apprentices have gone on to a variety of new roles within their organisations, while other apprentices are working in other regions. This tesitifies strongly to the success of apprenticeship in developing the practical skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

In 2011-12 Renaissance South West will continue to work closely with funders, employers and training providers, in particular on how organisations can support new entrants like apprentinces, progression pathways after apprenticeships in our region and advocating for clarity in qualification frameworks.

What is a Creative Apprenticeship?

The Creative Apprenticeship is a brand new alternative route into the creative industries, one based on ability and potential rather than academic track record or social background and contacts.

It is a mix of on the job and off the job training where young people have the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge and attain qualifications while doing so. These qualifications are designed and approved by industry. On-the-job learning is a significant component of the Creative Apprenticeship allowing young people to break the vicious circle of "no experience equals no job".

The Creative Apprenticeship consists of a vocational qualification at level 2 or 3 and a theory based qualification at level 2 or 3. The following two apprenticeships are the most relevant to the museum sector:

 • Cultural Heritage Venue Operations
 • Community Arts Management

This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
