Leading Change Programme

Building leadership capacity is rightly identified as a priority by the West Midlands Renaissance Programme Board and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). In 2009, decision makers from regional museums and galleries in the West Midlands were engaged in the groundbreaking programme “Leading Change”. A blend of assessment, training, coaching and leadership development were brought together to deliver a programme of leading through change, further enhancing the skills of leaders to develop their teams and help their workforce achieve its’ full potential.

The pilot programme was completed in October 2009 and all agreed that the regional programme was a success. They particularly valued:

 • Action learning sets
 • Coaching
 • Opportunities for networking
 • 360-degree feedback
 • Workshops

Further ideas suggested included a Director's forum and a course for aspiring leaders. These suggestions and the detailed evaluation that is still being conducted will ensure that the 2010/11 programme will be even more successful and effective.

For more information contact Bob McDermid, Skills Development Officer, on +44 (0) 121 303 2584 or robert.p.mcdermid@birmingham.gov.uk.

Management Academy

Renaissance West Midlands has provided a range of management development opportunities for the staff of regional museums and galleries in response to needs identified by our partners at national and regional level including the MA and the Creative and Cultural Sector Skills Council. Our latest initiative is the Management Academy, a comprehensive learning process aimed at meeting the needs of new or aspiring managers.

Personal and Professional Development

The Skills Development programme covers aspects of personal and professional development. The programme content is a result of feedback from delegate evaluation forms as well as research studies. Courses include Copyright Law for museums, Marketing, Project Management and many more. The courses aim to meet the needs of staff and volunteers in a fast changing museum environment.

For more information contact Rafeela Akhtar, Training Co-ordinator, on +44 (0) 121 303 3257 or rafeela.akhtar@birmingham.gov.uk.

Renaissance at Work

The RAW training programme provides a range of training in all aspects of collection care. The courses are free and are delivered by key museum professionals and provide easy to understand, practical training which you can apply and use in your museum. We acknowledge that many museums are often restricted in terms of time and budget and wherever practical we take this into account.

The courses provide skills and knowledge that can be used in support of the Accreditation process, and are valuable additions to CPD logs and CVs.

Courses are held at museums around the region to ensure that they are easily accessible and to provide local networking opportunities.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
