People's Record

People's Record

The People's Record is a unique national community archive of people's responses to hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. MLA supported 29 projects across England to record the national mood at the moment of Handover from Beijing and the launch of the Cultural Olympiad in September 2008. The resulting publication, available to download on the right, provides a snapshot of people's engagement with London 2012, demonstrating great diversity and strength of opinion across the country.

These opinions are now being explored further through a network of schemes, built on partnerships between museums, libraries, archives and community groups. MLA is supporting these partnership projects to explore the following themes:

  • Health, Sport and Wellbeing
  • Changing Places
  • Young People's Aspirations

Projects will discover, create and celebrate community records: documents, photographs, film, oral history and artwork. Projects will ensure that these records are archived for the future. MLA will provide training and is developing the online platform to host and encourage use of project records.

The Record

The National Archives, in partnership with MLA and the British Library, is leading a coordinated records management programme to generate a comprehensive archive and support efficient delivery of the Games.

Museums Collecting Strategy

We are working to bring together the museums network, sports associations and other key bodies. The strategy will ensure a comprehensive collection is housed in appropriate museums and made available for future generations.
