"Stewart helped me by helping to show me what live music is about. Before the library gigs I had never been to a gig and since I have come to realise that songs sound better live. The help he has given Shockwaves Radio since we started has really helped by giving us exclusive sometimes, therefore a good way to promote our radio station".
Luke Jones -Director Shockwaves Radio, Heysham High School

"Stewart has helped us by providing Shockwaves radio with an opportunity to go to gigs and interview the bands therefore promoting Shockwaves Radio. Stuart has helped me by giving me the chance to go to more live gigs with some amazing bands, widening my range of music that I currently listen to".

"Get it Loud in Libraries is a fantastic scheme. It does not undermine the integrity of the library service, but uses imagination and energy to open up libraries to the very audiences that libraries desperately need to attract to stay relevant. You only have to look at the success of similar schemes like the Science Museum's adult evenings to see that Lancashire is leading the way in innovation while preserving the central role of its libraries"
Ed Vaizey, Shadow Arts Minister, MP

"The school radio station has become a force to be reckoned with thanks to the GILIL support of the project. We have had people in the community approach the project as they have heard about it through the gigs. Stewart is very supportive of the young people who go to the gigs, allowing the "New Music" section of the radio station to grow in experience as interviewers and to gain a wider knowledge of the industry.
GILIL has commissioned the young people at Heysham High School to design a backdrop for the gigs and has provided tickets for the students who would otherwise not have had this opportunity. We are extremely grateful for his time and energy".

"The volunteering opportunities offered through 'Get It Loud In Libraries' are fantastic opportunities for young people to express themselves in a that reflects the passions, cares and interests of young people. The skills that young people can gain by getting involved in these opportunities are endless. Through this project young people have been given to develop their talents, try new things which will leave a lasting impression on their lives and help to shape their future. The opportunity also allows young people to explore new forms of accreditation such as Arts Awards which recognizes their efforts. The skills and experiences gained whilst participating in these opportunities give young people the chance to apply for employment within this sector which they may not have been able to before.
The success of this project is all down to the staff involved in its coordination and the volunteers that support the activities making it fantastic!!"

"YouPeople of all backgrounds benefit from valuable opportunities to volunteer within their community and, within the GILIL scheme, become involved in events created by and for young people. GILIL run exciting and popular events that young people really want to attend, and the volunteers gain experience of responsibility at the same time as attending fun music gigs where they can see and hear the bands who are up and coming in the British music industry. GILIL is a great success! "
Fran Walker, Head of Key Stage 4, Lancaster Girls' Grammar School

"In an era when the media generally implies a growing reduction in community values, it is refreshing to see the superb work being done in recent years by the staff of Lancaster Library.
The thrilling initiative that is the GILIL programme has seen a series of successful events open to all members of the local populace.
Importantly, it brings much focus to the library itself and raises the profile of this essential service while never patronising those it seeks to reach.
In particular, the music events have brought a most welcome addition to the local entertainments scene and the very fact that it brings contemporary, high-profile acts to an all-ages audience is unique, even in a national context.
Schoolchildren, older teens, students and adults alike occupy the same space and a true sense of community is apparent.
Now that GILIL has established itself well beyond Lancaster's boundaries we can all be very proud of what has been achieved here, mapping a way for other communities and especially for firmly illustrating that innovative approaches to making local resources usable in other ways may well be the only way forward".

"Working on the pictures for GILIL has helped me improve my photographical skills and has let me experiment with different techniques! It's also helped me with my portfolio for my art course, as it shows I am committed to things out side of school; showing that I am motivated. My photography has improved a great deal since taking the GILIL photographs, as it's given me an ongoing project to work on. It's always exciting to see new bands and meet new people! It helps my CV by showing that I can volunteer, which basically means I'm dedicating my free time to something in the community. I have to say though, without GILIL, I probably wouldn't have developed my skills so much - feeling like I have the responsibility to take the photos for GILIL gives me that extra push to try harder and be the best I can be"

"GILIL is undoubtedly a hugely worthwhile community project in Lancaster, and helps the community (especially the youth of the city) in a number of ways. GILIL provides much needed exciting entertainment (and we're talking something that kids actually really want to do, that is genuinely exciting and special) in the city, keeping kids off the streets (which is the usual source of entertainment in a small place like Lancaster). There are very few venue's in the city capable of hosting large gigs (certainly for under 18 year olds), and the organisers have reached the most unusual yet suitable solution to this problem - by using the underappreciated city library! The setting provides an interesting venue which has proved itself capable of hosting big name bands and artists, such as Adele, and Black Kids.
The gigs are always well attended with many selling out weeks in advance, and the atmosphere is like no other gig you've seen before - a usually quite library room surrounded by bookshelves crammed with fun loving youngsters (and adults alike) with a fantastic world-class band rocking out at the front of the room. This is a situation where people are having real genuine fun, while still remaining safe and without having to resort to getting drunk or using drugs, which unfortunately is usually all too popular in gigs. Everyone enjoys the nights and most come back again and again. Growing up in the city, I can certainly say that the service provided by GILIL is something which we never had before now, and it's well appreciated by all in the community!
The gigs allows the community to get involved with things such as being on the street team, selling tickets, manning the shop, interviewing the bands, etc. It really is a group effort for the local community, by the local community. The project really is a fantastic project and will hopefully inspire other communities to follow the lead"
Jack Wild (17), GILIL Volunteer, Filming.

Having attended the 'Get it Loud in Libraries' gigs it is obvious that the project appeals to all members of the community both young and older people. It is an excellent opportunity for music lovers to enjoy live music in a safe and positive atmosphere and at an affordable price. Stewart has provided the school with a number of free tickets for students who may not otherwise be able to afford to go, the events are very popular. Our students are encouraged to write reviews for the school newsletter about their experiences at these events. Younger teenagers have problems finding somewhere to go due to their age. The project provides them with an excellent opportunity to socialise with other teenagers in a safe environment and to have the opportunity to experience the library in a new and different way. The gigs finish at a sensible time for teenagers, parents can pick their children up and know that they are safe. We feel that the music gigs are an excellent opportunity for all to enjoy and should continue!

“It has been a really innovative development and we have had very positive feedback from all the CAA artists who have played.
It’s lovely to have libraries available as a fresh and intimate option and it really is a different experience for both the artists and their fans”.
