Inspiring learning

An improvement framework for museums, libraries and archives

The MLA relaunched an improved Inspiring Learning For All Toolkit website to coincide with the launch (23 March 2009) of the Informal Adult Learning White Paper from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Science (DIUS).

The new website aligns Inspiring Learning to other key policy frameworks such as Every Child Matters.

The MLA is calling on the museum, library and archive community to sign up to this new movement and play their part in creating more learning opportunities for more people.

Inspiring Learning continues to combine a planning and assessment tool with the world renowned generic learning outcomes that have successfully provided real evidence of the outcomes of museums, libraries and archives activity on both people and communities.

The refreshed site is cleaner, sharper and more intuitive than the original site, launched in 2003.

It introduces the generic social outcomes that MLA have been developing over the last 3 years. These generic social outcomes demonstrate the wider community contribution of museums, libraries and archives, identifying impact on social cohesion, health and well-being.

Re-purposed as a self-help tool we hope that Inspiring Learning will inspire you to develop, improve and provide evidence of the impact of what you do.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
